It held up nicely to the wear and tear of more than a handful full-charge rides on challenging terrain.

    Second to last on our list is the Hoverstar HS2.0. Over the years, this is one of the best hoverboards under $100 we've tested.

    It is comfortable to ride - the 6.5" solid tires are wide and have deep tread for solid grip on changing surfaces. We didn't expect a lot out of two 200W motors, but 5.4 MPH is decent for a quick recreatonal ride for the kids. With 4.2 miles of tested range, it still beats the Gotrax Edge which is similarly priced.

    The Hoverstar HS2.0 is highly portable. It weighs just 12.5 lbs, but we found the weight capacity of 165 lbs to be limiting.

    The 24V 4 battery is UL certified, but charging is a bit slower than we'd have wanted. Quite impressively, this board music speakers and the chrome design looks really sleek.

    We're quite impressed that the Sypher offers such a wide set of features at a price that anyone can handle. In our tests, the 300W hub motors delivered a top speed of 6.7 MPH, which is slightly above average and we got 5.4 miles of range on a single charge.

    While the Sypher isn't the fastest hoverboard on the market, you still get a lot for your money in terms of performance and functionality. Bluetooth speakers, app control, three riding modes and the innovative LED display, to name a few.

    This hoverboard is sturdy and well-built. There are no obvious weak points or flaws in its design and the structural integrity is on par with more premium models. It's fairly heavy at 16.2 lbs though, so kids may find it difficult to carry around. The load capacity of 220 lbs makes up for that as it can be ridden by both kids and adults.

    If you're all about fancy features and customizations, the Sypher offers a lot of fun at a low price. The Bluetooth connectivity was a bit buggy at times and the audio quality of the speakers isn't the best, but at such a low price, it's impossible to fault.

    Hoverboard recalls became commonplace in 2016 and 2017. So, are hoverboards safe? Has the hoverboard combusting problem been solved?

    In this article, we’ll go through a timeline of recalls, how hoverboards have gotten significantly safer, and how to avoid hoverboard fire hazards on your own.

    Since 2016, there have been a total of 23 hoverboard recalls. Around 1,115,200 hoverboard units have been affected. Fire hazards (battery overheating) have been the main reason for recalls.

    Are Hoverboards Safe in 2024?

    According to CPSC’s list of hoverboard recalls, there were no recalls in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Why? We can thank Underwriters Laboratories, or UL, an independent safety testing company. They created a series of tests for hoverboards and other self-balancing scooters a few years back.

    For a while, no hoverboard met these UL 2272 requirements, but in early 2016, they approved a hoverboard produced by Ninebot, Segway’s parent company.

    You’ll notice that lots of hoverboards were recalled after that, so even though the new safety standard was set up, most brands were not meeting them. That’s changed, luckily, and you can find many brands with the UL stamp of approval.

    What Does UL Test For?

    What does the UL test for? Here’s a rundown of their tests designed to separate hoverboard brands that catch fire from the ones that don’t:

    The batteries

    Nearly all hoverboards use lithium-ion batteries because they are small but store a lot of power. Unfortunately, they are also prone to overheating and explosions.

    To determine if that’s possible with specific hoverboards, UL has tests that stimulate a battery cell heating up and what happens if a battery gets punctured. If they explode, that’s bad news. A self-balancing scooter fire can destroy an entire house.

    The charger

    Hoverboards use USB chargers, and they are not always safe. Before a hoverboard gets a UL certification, the lab tests the charger. Using a charger that is not UL-certified is a bad idea. A bad charger could cause perfect batteries to get overcharged and then they explode.

    They might also just pop, dry out, and die without much fanfare. Neither is good. Knock-off chargers are common, so it’s best to use the charger you got with your UL-certified hoverboard because you know it’s been tested.

    The wires

    When building a hoverboard, the manufacturing process must be top-notch. To save money, some brands aren’t very careful. UL opens up the hoverboards they’re testing and takes a closer look. The wires were crimped and exposed in those that didn’t pass their tests, which could easily cause a short circuit. Some were not secured properly, so when riding, they could actually come loose. 

    Other manufacturing issues

    While looking inside hoverboards, UL might also notice shortcuts that could cause big problems. According to Quartz, UL has found metal shavings inside, which could cause short-circuiting and wire tears. To test for sound construction, UL conducts drop tests. If the board breaks and parts come loose after just one drop, it’s probably not going to get that coveted UL 2272 stamp.

    Other tests

    UL has many other tests for hoverboards, like a leakage current test, shock test, crash test, mold stress relief test, water exposure test, thermal cycling test, motor overload test, and vibration test.     Even if a model has gotten a UL 2272 certification, there could still be hoverboard safety issues. Things can change once you’ve been riding a board for a while, and improper care can make a hoverboard dangerous. However, the UL 2272 certification is the best defense against hoverboard fires, so you should absolutely only consider brands that meet that standard. You can find lots on Amazon now, as well as other retailers. Brands wear the distinction with pride, so if you don’t see it clearly displayed on the board or product page, odds are it probably isn’t safe enough.

    How to Protect your Hoverboard against Fire Risks

    Even perfectly designed hoverboards with a UL 2272 certification could cause a fire or other problems.

    While there have only been a few official hoverboard recalls since 2017, you’ll still see stories of scooters exploding or starting fires. Why? The first reason could be that the hoverboards weren’t UL-certified. The other might be that the owners weren’t taking proper of their board. Here’s what to do to avoid playing with fire:

    1. Don’t buy a really cheap hoverboard or one that isn’t UL-certified

    This is a no-brainer. With hoverboards, you get what you pay for. While you don’t have to spend $1000+ on a top hoverboard, it is riskier to get one that’s under $200 or so.  You should certainly never buy one that isn’t UL 2272 certified. If you wanna go cheap, check our list of safe cheap hoverboards instead.

    You’ll frequently see stories of hoverboards exploding overnight or after their owners have left them charging for hours at a time. Most hoverboards take just 3 hours at the most to charge fully, and then they should be unplugged. This isn’t just to save energy; leaving a hoverboard charging too long can overcharge the battery. As we mentioned before, even perfectly good batteries can explode or die when overcharged, so don’t do it. You should also not leave your hoverboard charging unattended.

    3. Don’t leave a fully-charged hoverboard lying around for very long

     If your hoverboard is fully charged, you shouldn’t leave it stored for too long. We recommend taking it for a short ride, so it gets down to at least 90%. Leaving a fully-juiced hoverboard in your garage or house for weeks at a time isn’t a great idea. It’s almost like the batteries' energy is bursting at the seams.

    4. Keep your hoverboard in a cool area

    Hoverboard batteries are sensitive to heat. If they get too hot, they can explode. Pretty much all batteries are like this, but lithium-ions are much more unstable. Make sure you aren’t leaving your hoverboard in a room you know gets really hot or hit with direct sunlight for hours at a time. Find a place that’s relatively cool and away from flammable objects. Ideally, you don’t expect your hoverboard to explode, but if it does, you want to make sure it won’t start a fire that spreads.

    5. Play nice with your board

    UL does conduct drop tests for hoverboards, but eventually, all hoverboards will break if you smash them around. Keep your board protected by not taking too many risks and not going off-road unless you have an all-terrain hoverboard specifically designed for the task. You should try not to crash just for your own safety, as well, so hopefully, bashing up your hoverboard is not something you intend to do.

    Since hoverboard manufacturers have mostly figured out how to make safe products, injuries are the most significant safety concern. Most people aren’t getting burned; they’re just falling off their hoverboards.

    To stay as safe as possible, always wear the appropriate gear. At a minimum, you should protect your head. Get a good helmet designed for cyclists since these have their own safety standards.

    You want to make sure it is fitted properly. Other recommended gear includes knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Falling on your tailbone can be incredibly painful, too, especially if you’re going at high speeds, so consider padded shorts specifically designed for skateboarders, snowboarders, and now, hoverboarders.

    Range and speed

    The E3 is equipped with a 500-watt motor and a 36-volt battery. This gives the hoverboard a top speed of 8.1 mph and up to 5 miles per charge. That’s on the lower side for many hoverboards, but for its price, it’s comparable to other boards you’ll see. It’s also faster and gives more range than the 400-watt E2, which has a top speed of 6.5mph and 4 miles of range.

    We recommend you charge the hoverboard after each ride to keep the battery in good shape. When significantly drained, it takes about 2-3 hours to recharge, which is not long at all.

    All Gotrax hoverboards have a UL 2272 certification, so they’ve passed rigorous safety tests. The E3 also has a self-leveling mode.     Introduction

    When people hear the word “hoverboard”, they often think of the Marty McFly hoverboard from the 1989 movie “Back To The Future” movies. However, we haven’t been able to realize the self-hovering board just yet.

    What we do have are self-balancing scooters (also nicknamed hoverboards). These hoverboards don’t actually hover but instead ride on wheels. As disappointing as it may sound, they’re lots of fun and they are great for commuting as well.

    Let’s take a look at the technology inside today’s hoverboards.

    What’s Inside a Hoverboard?

    A hoverboard contains quite a few components under the hood. In a standard hoverboard, you’ll find the following:

    • A battery
    • A logic board
    • 2 gyroscopes (one for each wheel)
    • 2 motors (one in each wheel)

    Time to explain what these things are.

    The Battery Pack

    The powerhouse of your hoverboard. This is quite self-explanatory. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to ride your hoverboard.

    Almost all hoverboards use lithium-ion batteries between 36V and 42V.

    Lithium-ion batteries are often seen in electric rideables because they’re lightweight and have a high energy density, giving you more mileage per charge in a small package. 

    It is crucial for hoverboards to be lightweight in order to get the best mileage and to climb slopes and terrain and whatnot.

    The lithium-ion batteries also discharge much slower than other types of batteries. Even if you leave your hoverboard in the dust for months, you can come back to an almost fully charged hoverboard right away.

    The Gyroscopes

    Next up are the gyroscopes. This is where the self-balancing technology comes into play. Each wheel sends separate speed and tilt information to the gyroscope next to it.

    The gyroscopes process that information and send it on to the main logic board.

    If your hoverboard is acting up, it is most likely because something is out of sync with the gyroscopes. That’s when you need to calibrate your hoverboard again. A calibration will reset the current state of your gyroscopes so all values get to zero again. This will most likely fix your issue.

    The Logic Board

    Just like a computer has a motherboard, a hoverboard has a logic board. In fact, most electronic devices have one.

    Much like a brain, the entire life of the hoverboard is controlled from here. It receives information (for instance from the gyroscopes) and based on that information it gives commands to other parts of the board.

    For instance, some hoverboards have different riding modes. Which riding mode you’re in is controlled by the logic board. The LED lights, power consumption, speeds, and more are controlled from here as well. The power on/off button also sends a signal to the logic board, either turning on or off the unit.

    To put it simply, the logic board ties all the other pieces together.

    The Wheels & Motors

    Usually, a hoverboard has two motors. One in each wheel. This allows the two wheels to accelerate and move independently from one another at different speeds. If this wasn’t the case, you wouldn’t be able to turn. Imagine that for a boring ride… 

    Each wheel is geared with sensors that read the speed (rpm) and tilt at any given time while riding. This information is what gets sent on to the gyroscopes.

    It may just look like a wheel, but there are actually a few technological things going on behind the scene.

    The Technology Inside The Footpads

    Below the footpads on your hoverboard are two switches on each side. These switches are used to detect how you move on the hoverboard.

    There is one switch located in the front and one at the back. Once these switches are activated, the switches tell the wheels to accelerate in a particular direction. 

    For instance, if you tilt your right foot forward on the footpad and your left foot backward, the following will happen:

    • The right front switch activates, telling the right wheel to accelerate forward.
    • The left back switch activates, telling the left wheel to accelerate backward.

    This would, in turn, make your board turn to the left on the spot. If you have trouble riding your hoverboard, this guide will help.

    Now, the more you lean in a particular direction, the greater a tilt the wheels will sense. This information is passed to the gyroscope and onto the logic board. This results in a smooth, gradual ride.

    Depending on how much you’re leaning in a direction, the acceleration will follow accordingly. If this wasn’t a feature, even the slightest of tilts would for the board at full speed in a direction.

    Instead of a solution that is ready out-of-the-box, you may also consider creating everything from scratch. This gives you full control and lets you have a fun day with your kid, unleashing your creative side.

    The level of detail is, of course, fully up to you. Whether you wanna go ahead and attach some simple stickers from the local store or create a full design with advanced patterns, it should all be possible on a budget.

    An X-Acto knife, and maybe some designer duct tape with interesting print will take you a long way.

    Carefully wrap your hoverboard using the designer duct tape in the areas you want to be covered and follow it up by cutting excess tape off using our X-Acto knife.

    The more time you take, the better the result will be. Also, don’t worry about covering footpads, charging ports or LED lights at this point. All this you will carefully cut off later using the knife.

    It’s possible that some of the duct tape will start to peel eventually but then you can simply peel off the entire area and replace it. Once you get the hang of it, it’ll be a quick fix.

    Place stickers wherever you see fit. A cool place that is often overlooked could be the wheels.

    Depending on the tape, you may wanna watch out for overlaps in the design so things align properly. For some designs, this may be necessary to get the best possible end result.

    Painting your Hoverboard

    An entirely different thing you may do is to paint your hoverboard. This customization will most likely be irreversible so you should make an effort to do things right the first time around.

    Ideally, you should use spray paint for this. Get out your desired spray paint color and prepare it for use. Before spraying, you must tape over all the areas you don’t wish to paint (just like you do when painting walls). Usually, this would be the footpads, LEDs, wheels and any buttons/connectivity ports.

    Once everything is taped up, you may start spraying paint on your hoverboard. Whether you wanna do one color everywhere or mix colors in different areas is up to you.

    Let the spray paint dry. Once dry, go for a second layer. Then, finally, finish off with a third layer. This should be enough to keep the hoverboard fully covered even if you scratch it at any point in the future.

    Once everything is dried up, it’s time to remove the tape and give your hoverboard a go with its new, reinvented design.

    You love your hoverboard, and you take good care of it. However, one day, what if the hoverboard is not turning on? You’re frustrated and worried that you’ll need to scrap the whole thing. Luckily, hoverboard problems have solutions, and through some troubleshooting, you can figure out what’s going on with yours.

    Possible Reasons Why A Hoverboard Won’t Turn On

    When a hoverboard doesn’t work when you push the power button, there are a handful of possibilities:

    • A hoverboard charger problem
    • A hoverboard battery problem
    • A wiring problem
    • A motherboard problem
    • Hoverboard is defective

    Let’s go through these five self-balancing scooter problems and walk through what to do.

    Charger Problems

    The reason your hoverboard isn’t turning on might be that it’s not charging properly. This could be the charger’s fault.

    How to check for charger problems

    1. First, connect your charger to the wall and make sure you see a green indicator light.
    2. Now, connect your charger to your hoverboard.
    3. What color is the light? It will be red for a little while, even if the battery is full, so give it a few minutes to turn green. If it doesn’t have this brief red time but stays green, the charger might be defective.
    4. If you have access to another charger (the same make as yours), you can try that one to see what happens. If this new charger does turn red first and then green like it’s supposed to, try turning the hoverboard on once it’s fully charged. If the same thing happens with the new charger, however, it actually isn’t a problem with the charger. It’s the board itself, most likely the battery.

    Before moving on to battery problems, there’s another possible issue that’s charger-related.

    All hoverboards have a charge port, with a locator tab that’s supposed to keep you from plugging the charger in wrongly. However, sometimes that happens because the charger and charge port don’t quite line up naturally.

    Unplug the charger and look at the charge port. It should have three pins and a little plastic plug, where you’ll see the locator tab.

    Now, just make sure the slot on the charger cord is lined up with the tab. Plug it in. If the charger light turns red and stays red, the board is now charging properly.

    Slow or defective charger

    The last charger-related issue: your hoverboard won’t turn on without a charger connected. It is probably because it’s charging very slowly.

    This issue is almost always because you’ve been using a defective charger, starting when you first got your hoverboard. Always use the charger the hoverboard came with.

    You may want to get a replacement charger if your current one is broken.

    Battery Problems

    If you determine that the charger isn’t the problem, it could be the battery.

    Checking for battery issues

    It is fairly simple to check to see if it is the battery at fault.

    1. With your charger and hoverboard connected, see if the green indicator LED lights stay green.
    2. Now, turn on the hoverboard.
    3. If the hoverboard starts flashing orange on the battery indicator, the battery is bad. It needs to be replaced. The battery also needs to be replaced if the fully-charged battery doesn’t have the right amount of volts. You can check this with a voltmeter.

    Depleted Battery

    Another possible explanation for when a hoverboard won’t turn on or charge is a depleted battery. This is an issue with the battery management system (BMS) on the battery, which is detecting too much amperage during a charge, so it shuts off the power.

    To troubleshoot this issue, carefully remove the battery from the hoverboard. You’ll need a screwdriver to take out the little screws, and you’ll need to undo a wire that connects the lights. Once the battery is out, use a voltage meter on the end of the battery’s terminal.

    If the voltage is less than 36 (around 33-34 volts), the battery is too low to charge on its own. If it’s actually higher, like over 40, it’s probably an error with the BMS.

    In this scenario, it will probably be easiest to take your hoverboard in for repairs and tell them what you’ve learned. You may need to get a new battery.

    Wiring Problems

    If you’ve determined it’s not a charger or battery issue, it could be the wiring.

    If you haven’t yet, take the cover off your faulty hoverboard and look at the wiring. Does everything look okay, with no frays or damage?

    Pay special attention to the wiring of the charger port and its connection to the motherboard. Unplug it and plug it back in, and then try charging and turning the board on.

    Motherboard Problems

    If none of the three hoverboard problems above were the cause of your woes, it might be the motherboard. There isn’t anything specific to do to see if the motherboard is the problem; it’s just a process of elimination.

    You can buy replacements from your board’s company, so you don’t need to throw out the entire hoverboard. The specific solution to your issue is best discovered with the manufacturer.

    Defective Hoverboard

    What if nothing you do seems to work? It could be that the faulty hoverboard is simply defective.

    In the manufacturing process, something went wrong, and no troubleshooting will solve the problem.

    Check your board model online and see if there were any hoverboard recalls or notices about faulty parts. Even if there aren’t, do call the company and talk to customer service. Explain the situation. You might be able to get a refund or maybe a partial refund, but there’s no guarantee. It’s worth a try, though.

    Speed & Range

    It is important to keep in mind that the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is a very budget-friendly hoverboard. Therefore, it’d be weird if it boasted the highest specs and most powerful motors on the market.

    That said, the ECO has a top speed of 7.4 miles per hour, which is excellent for a self-balancing scooter this cheap. Its two 200-watt motors – one in each wheel (Read: how a hoverboard works) – allow it to climb slopes at a 15-degree angle which is very decent as well.

    The major shortcoming with the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is its short range. It is only able to go around 4 miles on a single charge before having to charge for 3 to 4 hours. For a hoverboard this cheap, however, you gotta expect to meet some drawbacks and overall the ECO is short on those.

    Construction

    The Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is a clean-looking hoverboard with seven different colorways. It’s available in black, teal, pink, red, purple, green and an extremely cool-looking ‘Galaxy’ colorway that is ideal for kids.

    The hoverboard is made with high-quality materials and is able to hold riders up to 220 lbs. The minimum weight required to activate the hoverboard is 44 lbs.

    The Hoverfly ECO is geared with solid rubber 6.5-inch wheels that provide a firm grip on most surfaces. It is not an all-terrain self-balancing scooter, however.

    The overall sturdiness of the hoverboard isn’t as impressive as on heavy-duty hoverboards like the Halo Rover X, but that can’t be expected at this price.

    Downsides

    Now on to the less fun stuff. What are the drawbacks of this hoverboard?

    Although there don’t seem to be many, the obvious one is its short range. 4 miles on a charge is lower than most competitors. The low range seems to be a recurrent issue with the Gotrax products. This hoverboard is therefore not ideal for commuting and longer trips as you’ll end up carrying it home over your shoulder because it runs dry quickly.

    Whereas many other hoverboards offer smartphone app integration and built-in Bluetooth speakers, the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO offers none of that. Those features are especially enjoyed by kids so you may want to consider if a slightly more expensive model would be more ideal for your kid.

    For such a small range, the ECO takes quite a long time to charge. 3-4 hours is a bit too much when it only yields 4 miles of fun.

    That said, the value you’re getting is great!

    Who Should Buy The Gotrax Hoverfly ECO?

    The ECO is ideal for kids, beginners, and people who just want to try out the trend. If you wanna ride in rough terrain or commute to and from work, the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO isn’t for you.

    Short and fun trips in urban areas without too much bumpy terrain is where the ECO excels. It is fairly lightweight easy to use for kids just getting started.

    Safety is also a popular concern that the Hoverfly ECO completely covers. The hoverboard has undergone lots of testing and absolutely aced its quality exam.

    If you care about budget and getting a lot of bang for your buck, the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is a solid choice any day of the week.
